The Two Monsoon Rule
The most important thing to know about Sri Lanka is that it has two separate monsoon seasons. This means there is always a "good" side of the island to visit, no matter when you travel.
December to April: Go South & West
This is the height of the tourist season. The weather is dry and sunny across the Cultural Triangle, Hill Country, and the famous southern beaches (Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna). Sea conditions are calm, perfect for snorkeling and swimming.
May to September: Go East & North
When the Yala monsoon hits the south, the East Coast comes alive. This is the prime time for sun-seekers in Trincomalee and Passikudah, and world-class surfing in Arugam Bay. The weather in the Cultural Triangle remains mostly dry during this time.
October to November: The Wildcard
This is the "inter-monsoon" period. It can rain anywhere, but it's rarely a washout. The crowds are at their lowest, and you can find incredible deals on luxury villas and hotels.
