Kandy to Ella Train: The Ultimate Guide & How to Book

The train journey from Kandy to Ella is often cited as the most beautiful train ride in the world.

Winding through emerald tea plantations, crossing old stone bridges, and passing through misty mountain passes, this 7-hour journey is the highlight of any Sri Lanka trip.

The Route: Kandy → Nanu Oya → Ella

The train departs Kandy and slowly climbs into the Hill Country.

  • Leg 1: Kandy to Nanu Oya (3-4 hours): Ascends through pine forests and tea estates. Nanu Oya is the station for Nuwara Eliya.
  • Leg 2: Nanu Oya to Ella (3-4 hours): The most scenic section. Passes through the clouds to mountainous summits (Pattipola is the highest station) and descends into Ella.

Train Schedule (Kandy to Ella)

Times are subject to change, check locally.

  • 08:47 AM: (Podu Menike) - Most Popular/Crowded
  • 11:10 AM: (Udarata Menike) - Good timing for late starters
  • 03:30 AM: (Night Mail) - Misses the views!

Which Ticket Class Should You Book?

  • 1st Class (AC): ~$15. Air-conditioned, comfortable, but windows don't open (bad for photos!).
  • 2nd Class (Reserved): ~$10. The Golden Ticket. Assigned seats, windows open, fans.
  • 3rd Class (Reserved): ~$6. Basic bench seats, very authentic, windows open.
  • 2nd/3rd Class (Unreserved): Cheap but extremely crowded. You might stand for 7 hours. Avoid if possible.

[!IMPORTANT] Reserved tickets sell out 30 days in advance. You often cannot buy them at the station on the day of travel.

Tips for the Best Experience

  1. Sit on the RIGHT Side: In the direction of travel (Kandy to Ella), the right side offers the best valley views, especially after Nanu Oya.
  2. Bring Snacks: There is no dining car. Vendors sell "wade" (lentil snacks) and tea, but bring water and lunch.
  3. The Door Shot: Everyone wants the photo hanging out the door. Be careful—the train rocks violently!
  4. Nine Arches Bridge: The train crosses this after Ella station (heading to Demodara), or before Ella (if coming from Badulla). The Kandy-Ella route ends before the bridge. To see the bridge, you must walk there from Ella town or take the train one more stop to Demodara.

Is it Worth the Hype?

Yes. Despite the crowds, the views are unmatched. For ~$10, it's a bucket-list experience you'll never forget.
