Pasikuda Beach Guide: Sri Lanka's East Coast Hidden Gem
When travelers think of Sri Lankan beaches, they usually picture the swaying palms and surf breaks of the south coast. But if your ideal beach involves impossibly calm, warm, and shallow turquoise water, you need to head to the east coast—specifically, Pasikuda (also spelled Pasikudah).
Here is why Pasikuda should be on your 2026 itinerary, especially if you are traveling between May and September.
The Magic of the Bay
Pasikuda is famous for having one of the longest stretches of shallow reef coastline in the world.
Because the bay is protected by an offshore reef, the water is completely devoid of the strong currents and crashing waves found elsewhere in Sri Lanka. You can walk hundreds of meters out into the ocean, and the warm, crystal-clear water will barely reach your chest.
This makes it arguably the most family-friendly beach in the entire country.
Best Time to Visit
Sri Lanka's weather is governed by two monsoons. The east coast (including Pasikuda, Trincomalee, and Arugam Bay) is in its prime from May to September.
During these months, while the south and west coasts are experiencing rain and rough seas, Pasikuda enjoys brilliant sunshine, calm waters, and perfect beach conditions.
Things to Do in Pasikuda
- Swimming and Wading: The primary activity here is doing absolutely nothing in the perfect water. It is a giant, natural swimming pool.
- Snorkeling and Scuba Diving: While the coral near the shore suffered from the 2004 tsunami and warming waters, boat trips out to the deeper reef offer good snorkeling and diving. You can spot reef sharks, rays, and tropical fish.
- Water Sports: Because the water is so calm, it's an excellent place for paddleboarding (SUP), jet skiing, and windsurfing.
- Visit Batticaloa: Just 35km south, the town of Batticaloa makes a great half-day trip. Explore the 17th-century Dutch Fort, walk along the lagoon, and visit the vibrant local markets.
Where to Stay
Pasikuda was developed as a "Resort Zone" post-2009. Unlike Arugam Bay's backpacker vibe, Pasikuda is lined with high-end resorts and boutique hotels, making it ideal for luxury travelers and families seeking comfort.
Expect large swimming pools, manicured lawns leading to the beach, and excellent seafood restaurants. While budget guesthouses exist slightly inland, the beachfront is dominated by 4 and 5-star properties.
The Verdict
If you want late-night beach parties or world-class surfing, go elsewhere. But if you want to float in bathtub-warm, crystal-clear water under a blazing sun, Pasikuda is unparalleled.
