Sri Lanka's Secret Surf Spots: Finding Waves Beyond Arugam Bay

While Arugam Bay and Weligama get all the headlines, Sri Lanka’s 1,300 kilometers of coastline are dotted with dozens of "secret" surf spots that offer world-class waves without the crowds.

If you're willing to explore slightly off the beaten track and maybe deal with a few more sea urchins, these are the breaks where you can still find the pristine surf experience.

1. Plantations & Coconuts (Midigama)

While Midigama is hardly a "secret" anymore, the Coconuts break can often be much quieter than the main points. It’s a fast, hollow left that works best at mid-tide.

2. SK Town (Matara)

Located just outside Matara, SK Town offers a long, sandy beach break that is perfect for those who want to escape the busy lineups of Mirissa. It works best in the morning before the wind picks up.

3. Peanut Farm (Near Arugam Bay)

Requires a bit of a trek or a tuk-tuk ride through some sandy tracks. Peanut Farm offers two distinct points: a mallow one for intermediates and a faster, more technical one for advanced surfers.

4. Hiriketiya (The Left)

The bay itself is busy, but if you look for the reef break on the far left side, you’ll find a much more challenging wave that scares off the beginners. It’s powerful, fast, and needs a good swell to work.

Just north of Arugam Bay, this point break can offer incredibly long rides (up to 800 meters on a miracle day). Because it’s a bit more exposed and requires more effort to reach, it remains much less crowded than Main Point.
