Sri Lanka Visa Guide 2026: ETA, Extending & Fees

Visiting Sri Lanka is easier than ever, but you need to get your paperwork right.

Most travelers need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival.

1. Do I Need a Visa?

• Citizens of Singapore, Maldives, Seychelles: Visa Free.
• Everyone Else (USA, UK, EU, Australia, etc.): You need an ETA.

2. Types of Tourist Visas (2026)

• Standard Tourist ETA (30 Days): Double entry. Valid for 30 days from arrival.
  • Cost: ~$50 USD online.
• Visa on Arrival: Available at the airport but costs more (~$60 USD) and lines can be long. Avoid this if possible.

3. How to Apply Online (The ONLY Official Way)

1. Fill out the application.
2. Pay with a generic credit card (sometimes Amex/Discover don't work).
3. Receive approval email within 24 hours (usually instant).
4. Print a copy just in case.

4. Extending Your Visa

Love Sri Lanka and want to stay longer? You can extend your 30-day visa up to 6 months.

• Where: Department of Immigration in Battaramulla (Colombo).
• How: Go in person (takes 3-4 hours) or use an online agent (extra fee).
• Cost: Varies by country, usually ~$50-100 USD for the extension.

5. Entry Requirements

• Passport valid for 6 months.
• Return ticket (rarely checked, but legally required).
• Sufficient funds.
