Sri Lanka Water Sports Guide (Beyond Surfing)
Surfing isn't the only thing to do in the water. Discover white water rafting, kite surfing, scuba diving, and paddleboarding in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Water Sports Guide (Beyond Surfing)
Sri Lanka is globally famous for its surf breaks. But if you aren't interested in catching waves—or if you just want to mix up your itinerary—the island's rivers, lagoons, and reefs offer a massive variety of aquatic adventures.
Here is your guide to the best water sports in Sri Lanka (that don't involve a surfboard).
1. White Water Rafting (Kitulgala)
Tucked away in the wet zone jungle between Colombo and the Hill Country lies the small town of Kitulgala (famous as the filming location for The Bridge on the River Kwai).
- The Experience: The Kelani River offers Grade 2 and 3 rapids. It’s thrilling but perfectly safe for beginners and older children.
- Bonus: Most rafting tours include "canyoning"—sliding down natural rock waterslides and jumping into deep jungle rock pools.
2. Kite Surfing (Kalpitiya)
As mentioned in our dedicated guide, the Kalpitiya peninsula on the northwest coast is one of the top kite surfing destinations in Asia.
- The Experience: The massive flat-water lagoon is perfect for absolute beginners taking lessons, while the ocean side offers wave riding for pros.
- Best Time: May to October for strong winds, or December to March for gentler breezes.
3. Scuba Diving (Trincomalee & Hikkaduwa)
While Sri Lanka may not rival the Maldives or the Red Sea for coral, it has excellent wreck diving and macro marine life.
- East Coast (Trincomalee/Nilaveli): Best from May to September. Pigeon Island offers shallow coral diving (and snorkeling with reef sharks), while deeper wrecks appeal to advanced divers.
- South/West Coast (Hikkaduwa/Unawatuna): Best from December to April. Explore old shipwrecks and rocky reefs teeming with turtles.
4. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
If you want a peaceful water experience, SUP is growing rapidly in Sri Lanka.
- Where to do it: The slow-moving rivers and lagoons are best. Weligama and Mirissa have operators who take you up the local rivers at sunrise.
- The Experience: You paddle silently through mangrove tunnels, spotting monitor lizards, kingfishers, and occasionally monkeys in the trees. It’s incredibly meditative.
5. Wakeboarding & Water Skiing (Bentota)
The Bentota River (Madu Ganga) on the west coast is wide, flat, and perfect for motorized water sports.
- The Experience: Numerous operators along the river bank offer jet skis, wakeboarding, banana boat rides, and water skiing. It's highly commercialized but a lot of fun for a half-day activity.
Whether you want adrenaline in the jungle rapids or a peaceful paddle through the mangroves, Sri Lanka's waters have much more to offer than just surf.
