Surfing Sri Lanka 2026: Best Spots by Skill Level + Seasonal Guide

Sri Lanka has emerged as a world-class surf hub. With water temperatures a consistent 28°C, you can ditch the wetsuit and focus on the waves.

Surf Spots by Skill Level (The Real Details)

1. Beginner: Weligama Beach

The 2km crescent bay is the king of beginners.

  • Wave Size: 1-3 feet on average, up to 5 feet on solid swell.
  • Exact Location: The best beginner sand-bars are found in the center of the bay, near the Weligama Surf School clusters.

2. Intermediate: Jungle Beach & Hiriketiya

  • Jungle Beach (Midigama): A left-hand reef break that can hold swells up to 7 feet. The rides here can reach nearly 500 meters during peak season (Dec-Feb).
  • Hiriketiya: A jungle cove with a perfect left-hand point break.

3. Advanced: Rams Right & Arugam Bay

  • Rams Right (Midigama): A fast, hollow right-hand reef break that is NOT for the faint of heart.
  • The Point (Arugam Bay): One of the longest rights in the world, working best from June to August.

The Seasonal Split

One of the best things about surfing in Sri Lanka is that there is always a coast that is working:

  • Nov - Apr: Southwest Coast (Weligama, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa).
  • May - Sep: East Coast (Arugam Bay, Whisky Point).

[!CAUTION] Safety Tip: Always check for sea urchins on reef breaks like Fisherman's Reef and Rams. Local boots are recommended for reef walking.
