The Perfect 5-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary (Short Break Guide)
Only have 5 days in Sri Lanka? Here is the perfect fast-paced itinerary covering the highlights: Colombo, Kandy, Ella, and a Southern Beach.

The Perfect 5-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary (Short Break Guide)
Is 5 days enough for Sri Lanka? Ideally, no (we recommend 10-14 days). But if you are doing a quick stopover from the Maldives, India, or the Middle East, 5 days is just enough time to get a taste of the island's magic.
Because time is short, you must hire a private driver for this itinerary. Relying on public transport for a 5-day trip will burn too much of your precious vacation time.
Here is the perfect "Highlight Reel" itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival & The Cultural Capital
Route: Colombo Airport ➔ Kandy (Approx. 3 hours)
Skip Colombo and head straight into the lush interior.
- Afternoon: Arrive in Kandy and visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
- Evening: Take a stroll around Kandy Lake and enjoy a traditional Kandyan cultural dance show.
- Overnight in Kandy.
Day 2: The World's Most Scenic Train
Route: Kandy ➔ Ella (Train journey)
- Morning: Have your driver drop you at the Kandy train station for the famous Blue Train. (Your driver will drive your luggage to Ella and meet you there).
- The Journey: Spend 6-7 hours hanging out the doors (carefully!), rolling past endless tea plantations and waterfalls.
- Evening: Arrive in the backpacker hub of Ella. Enjoy dinner and live music at Cafe Chill.
- Overnight in Ella.
Day 3: Hiking & Bridges
Route: Explore Ella
- Early Morning: Hike Little Adam’s Peak for sunrise (easy 1-hour walk) for panoramic mountain views.
- Mid-Morning: Walk to the Nine Arches Bridge to watch a train pass over the jungle gorge.
- Afternoon: Drive south out of the mountains towards the coast (approx. 3.5 hours).
- Overnight in a South Coast beach town (Mirissa, Unawatuna, or Weligama).
Day 4: Beach Bliss & Forts
Route: South Coast
- Morning: Relax on the beach, take a beginner surf lesson in Weligama, or go snorkeling.
- Afternoon: Take a short drive to the Galle Dutch Fort.
- Evening: Walk the historic ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset, browse the boutique shops, and have a romantic dinner in the colonial grid.
- Overnight in South Coast.
Day 5: Departure
Route: South Coast ➔ Colombo Airport (Approx. 2-2.5 hours via the Expressway)
- Morning: One last ocean swim or a quick visit to a sea turtle hatchery.
- Afternoon: Take the Southern Expressway directly from the coast back to the airport for your flight home.
Why this works:
This route gives you culture (Kandy), mountains and the famous train (Ella), and tropical beaches/colonial history (South Coast/Galle) without spending your entire 5 days stuck in a car. It is fast-paced, but highly rewarding!
